Are Holster Boxes a Good Choice for Handmade Soap?
When you put time into creating a beautiful bar of soap, you want customers to see it. The natural edge, colors and texture are all part of what makes your product special.
A soap holster box lets those details show while giving you space for branding and product information. It also adds structure and protection around the portion of the bar it covers.
But is it the right packaging for your soap? That depends on how you sell your bars, how they’re handled and how much of the product you want on display.

What Is a Soap Holster Box?
A holster box is an open-top paperboard box that holds the lower portion of a soap bar while leaving part of the soap exposed.
It allows the product itself to become part of the packaging design. Customers can see the bar’s shape, color and handcrafted details, while the printed panels provide room for your logo, scent name and other product information.
For handmade soap with a distinctive natural edge, that combination can be especially effective.
Holster Box, Full Box or Belly Band: Which Should You Choose?
The best place to start is with how you sell your soap.
Holster boxes for in-person sales
At a farmers market, a holster box works great. Shoppers can see the actual soap, and the brand owner can display and handle the bars carefully.
The packaging frames the product instead of covering it completely. A colorful swirl or textured edge can become part of what catches a customer’s eye.
Enclosed boxes for more coverage
If most of your soap sales happen online, a fully enclosed soap box may be a better fit. It covers more of the bar and offers more protection during handling.
An enclosed box also gives you the most billboard space for your design. You have more room to tell your brand’s story, explain the product and create a consistent look across the package.
The soap will still need suitable shipping packaging, but enclosing the bar provides an additional layer of coverage.
Belly bands for a more exposed presentation
A belly band wraps around part of the soap, leaving more of the bar visible. It offers a simple place for your logo, scent name and product details while keeping the handmade soap front and center.
The tradeoff is less coverage and generally less room for information than a box. For a carefully displayed bar at a market, that may be exactly what you want.
Both a belly band and a holster let the soap contribute to the overall design. A holster adds more structure around the bar while keeping its top exposed. You can explore YBS holster boxes here.
When Might a Holster Box Not Be the Best Fit?
A holster leaves part of the soap exposed to its surroundings. That exposed portion can be damaged during handling, so it’s worth thinking about the full path from packing the bar to putting it in a customer’s hands.
Will you handle and display the bars yourself? Will they be shipped individually? Will they be moved frequently or handled by several people?
For a brand owner selling carefully displayed soap at farmers markets, a holster can work beautifully. For soap that needs more coverage through storage, shipping or retail handling, an enclosed box may be the better choice.
Getting the Fit Right
Sizing is the number one mistake we see when ordering soap packaging. Even a great design won’t work well if the box is too tight or too loose.
The best way to get the right fit is to send us a physical bar of soap. We can use the actual product to fit a holster box rather than relying on measurements alone.
If you prefer to send dimensions, measure the bar’s length, width and depth with a ruler. Include photos showing the ruler alongside the soap for each measurement. Those photos help us understand the shape and orientation of your bar.
Also tell us how you want it displayed: standing upright in portrait format or resting on its side in landscape format. That choice affects how the artwork should read when the packaged soap is on display.
Let the Design Help Customers Find Their Favorite Scent
Your holster box should make the brand, soap name and scent easy to recognize. Plan space for ingredients and other information appropriate to your product, too.
Color is another useful way to help customers navigate your range. A lemongrass holster could be a nice yellow, while a lavender version could use a shade of purple. Shoppers can start making the connection before they pick up the soap or smell it.
Keep the logo placement and other key design elements consistent across the range, then let the colors and scent details change. Each bar can have its own personality while still looking like part of the same brand.

Need Help With the Artwork? We Can Design It for You.
You don’t need finished artwork to get started.
At YBS Packaging, we can design your holster box free of charge. Send us your logos, product information and an idea of the style you’re looking for, and we’ll put the design together for review. See our Instagram post about the design offering, and explore your options on our holster boxes page.
Before approving your artwork, take time to check the template and PDF proof carefully. Review the wording, scent names, artwork orientation and placement of every element. Ask a friend to review the proof as well. A fresh set of eyes can catch something you’ve overlooked.
Less Paperboard Can Mean Lower Cost
Compared with a similarly sized enclosed box, a holster uses less paperboard. That can help lower the packaging cost while reducing the amount of material used around each bar.
The final price depends on the size, quantity and design choices, but holsters are worth considering if you want a printed box with less material coverage.
Test the Fit Before Production
We can produce a blank pre-production sample so you can test the fit before moving forward.
If you send us the physical soap bar, that fit sample is free of charge. If you provide dimensions only, there is a fee because there is a risk the sample won’t fit and the process may need to start over.
Sending the actual bar gives us the best starting point for getting the packaging right.
