Is There Any Difference Between Chapstick And Lip Balm?

There are thousands of lip care products on the market. We generally call them lip balm, lip salve, chapstick, lip smacker, and so on. We often use these words interchangeably. In so many contexts, we use the term "lip balm" and "chapstick" with the same meaning. Yet, in most cases, the word “chapstick” is being used incorrectly, but only in a literal sense. Legally and technically, it is correct. You may be a little puzzled now, but let me explain. Here's the difference between lip balm and chapstick:

Lip balm

Lip balm is used for topical applications to protect the lips. Most lip balms contain waxy substances, like beeswax or carnauba wax.

Some use petroleum jelly as a moisturizing substance that helps lock in moisture. Others use shea butter, or lanolin.

There are lip balms that medicate or soothe various lip conditions. They contain phenol, salicylic acid, or sunscreen.

This, however, places them in the drug category.

Others stand out on the market through their beauty enhancing qualities. Especially through added dyes, flavors, and fragrances.

People can buy lip balms in various types of containers. From tins and jars to squeezable tubes, or lipstick applicators, to name a few.

On the other hand...

Chapstick

The chapstick is a type of lip balm. How did we get to call it “chapstick” and not lip balm?

Here’s how the term appeared:

“ChapStick” was the first-ever brand of lip balm originally created by Pfizer Consumer Healthcare. It appeared on the market in the early 1880s and the famous logo as we know it came out in the 1930s.

It’s technically over 100 years old and one of the most popular types of lip balm to exist.

Given its worldwide and frequent use, the term has been generalized to such an extent that “chapstick” is the term replacing all forms of lip balm in a tube or lipstick applicator.

“Due to its popularity, the term has become a generalized trademark. It popularly refers to any lip balm contained in a lipstick-style tube and applied in the same manner as lipstick. However, the term is still a registered trademark, with rights exclusively owned by GlaxoSmithKline.” (Wikipedia)

DID YOU KNOW?Before lip balms, people needed a solution to treat chapped lips. In 1829, Lydia Maria Child, a women’s rights activist, suggested that an effective treatment was placing earwax on the lips. So technically, this was the earliest recorded type of lip balm.As you can imagine, it wasn’t a very popular one.

Chapstick Is For Everyone, All Year Long

Everyone uses chapsticks. Women, men, and children carry them in their pockets, purses, or bags, everywhere. In winter, lips get exposed to cold and wind, and they can become dry and cracked. During summer, long exposure to sun rays, heat, and dryness, may affect lips’ sensitive skin. That’s why people are looking for constant ways to protect the health and beauty of their lips. Based on the weather, they want to buy salves that offer moisture, intensive repair, or high SPF protection.

Or they want to look more beautiful and confident while enjoying the feeling of self-care. Each of these reasons leads to more lip balm consumption which means great news for you. All-year-round you can put your products into the spotlight in so many ways. And the best part is...

Same Tube, Different Labels

The best thing with chapstick labels is that:

  • You can vary your labeling strategy with the seasons, production varieties, or events
  • You don't have to incur extra costs related to new recipient production

When you already have the tubes with the balm inside, all you have to do is stick the right labels, based on their features or purpose.

For example, you can emphasize different types of weather your products may protect against.

You can highlight sun resistance in the summer.

Or mention cold and wind protection in the winter. This will remind shoppers why they need lip balm.

Shifting your products' visual identity is a good way to keep buyers interested.

Plus, if you set up a limited-time offer, a seasonal label is the right place to discuss it. It's much more cheap and practical to change label designs seasonally.

In case you’re not manufacturing your own brand of salve, you can team up with third parties.

After all, making promotional chapsticks with companies' logos on the labels is quite a trend now.

So, all you have to do is design, print, and apply custom chapstick labels that fit your strategy and needs.

Custom Design For Your Chapstick Labels

With well-designed and compelling chapstick labels, increased sales can become a reality. Whatever type of chapstick you’re producing, your labels have to provide information about ingredients as well as branded imagery buyers will respond to.However, compliance should always be a priority. Going by the rule saves you time and money. Make sure to check FDA’s regulations about your product. Sometimes, what you describe your product as can make it a cosmetic or a drug. And if your label says the chapstick treats lip skin conditions, it's definitely a drug. Make sure to pay close attention.

3. Choose the material type of your chapstick labels

All our labels are made of biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP). This is a durable material that makes them oil & water-resistant, tear-resistant, chemicals & UV resistant, and non-toxic.

This material gives them extra strength making them easy to print, coat, and laminate at the same time.

Plus, you never have to worry about them peeling off, smudging, or fading. They are durable and reliable.

You can choose between three different types of labels.

White labels
White BOPP
Printed on white film. Any color can be printed on top of the white ink.
Clear labels
Clear BOPP
Printed on transparent background film. Illusion of an “invisible label”.
Metallic labels
Metallic BOPP
Printed on a silver substrate. Makes all printed colors appear metallic.

4. Coatings and finishes for chapstick labels

Make sure to add an extra touch. You’ll never be sorry for it. Make your labels special because they deserve it.

All our labels are finished with a gloss or matte laminate for FREE.
